First of all I would like to thank Norah for inviting me to participate in this discussion. I think it is interesting and potentially very useful. I have a few things to add, but first Ill give a very brief background on my experiences. I have been in the hosting business since July 2004. Prior to this I hosted sites with several hosting companies, some experiences were good and some were bad. Enough with the background I dont want to bore anyone.
I have a few suggestions inaddition to the ones norah made on http://www.hedir.com/openmic/Hedir_Web_Directory_Category_Notes .
1. If a hosting company makes unrealistic offers beware. Features such as "Unlimited Space, Unlimited Bandwidth and Sites" are unrealistic and if utilized wont work out. A server only hs so much space and a the connection to the internet is only so fast hence the bandwidth is restricted to that speed. In the past I have hosted sites with 2 companies that offered this and had my account suspended. When I inquired why I was pointed to the buried in the TOS. 1 companies stated that a client couldnt monopolize on the servers resources, the other that the hosting company could cancel any account for any reason they deemed appropriate. The reson they deemed appropriate was that my site used too much bandwidth and was not suitable for a shared hosting server. Both companies wanted to sell me a dedicated server and they would get my sites back up asap.
2. While reseller accounts are good for some people I would never buy hosting from a reseller of a reseller. If the server is not functioning properly and you report it, the reseller will report to his reseller and that reseller will report it to the actual hosting provider. Any responses or questions will be relayed back thru this same chain of companies. At best your problem will take longer to solve at worst your message wont be acurately relayed or the actual host that has root access into the server wont deem your problem as important as you arent directly their customer. If you cancel someone down the chain looses a client and not them. A reseller almost never has root access to a server and is very limited in their ability to solve problems.
3. SSH access makes life simpler but you dont want a host handing it out to everyone. Certain malicious scripts can be insalled in ssh can give the user control over the server and your account or damage (in some cases erase data ) on the server. I learned this the hard wayWe require a user mail us a copy of their drivers license or other legal id and a copy of a utility bill with their name on it. This limits the number of people in shh and alows us to closely monitor those accounts. We are automatically notified everytime there is an shh access. It also gives us information to provide to authorities if they cause any harm.
4. Security This kinda goes along with ssh access. Does the host have a firewall? Do the have a rootkit detector? How often does it scan? Do they provide ddos protection? While no form of ddos protectionis fool proof good protection will eliminate most attacks. Hopefully there is never a need for this but remember it is your site, and your customers/vistiors data that you are counting on them to keep secure.
Most hosts will be glad to provide this information if they have nothing to be ashamed of.
I hope this informations is helpful. Good luck and happy reviews. _________________ Galaxy-Hosts.com Out of this world hosting at down to earth prices!
CTPhil, I know a bad experience with a hosting company really sucks. But I would like to make you an offer. I will give you 2 months free hosting with my company and waive the setup fee. I will be submitting my site as soon as the design/layout revamp is complete and all I ask is that you post an honest review when I submit in a few weeks. Oh and in the nest few days we will be doubling the bandwidth allowed on the accounts so when your account is set up it will be with double the ammount advertised on the site. I wont take any payment information till your first payment is due, jst message me on here with your email and I will set your account up.
Note to mods if this post is clasifed as advertising and not allowed then delete it. Thanks _________________ Galaxy-Hosts.com Out of this world hosting at down to earth prices!
Not the least expensive, not the most expensive, but what really sets them apart for me is they ROCK when it comes to customer support and service. Very proactive and thorough in everything they do.
Support response time is usually counted in minutes. Great communication with their customers. Always willing to help a newbie out no matter how dumb the question...

Thanks for the offer, but I'm happy with the two hosts I now have. I have accounts with ix Webhosting and 1&1 Webhosting. When the ix term expires, I will move my site there to 1&1, as it won't cost any extra. I like their plan, no setup fee, and they'll host any number of sites as long as you are within the disc space and bandwidth of your plan.
