I would like to go ahead and get votes on a new idea that has been bounced around.
Recommend/Not Recommend/Undecided
so far and in the past we have asked for a poster to add whether they Recommend, Do Not Recommend, or are Undecided in their post.
Since we do not have guest posts in the reviewarea any longer I would like to change this so a poster does not have to post this information any longer.
Voting by Submitter
So far we have been adding sites to the ADDED sites area if they had 6 votes.
We had been running into the problem, or atleast seemed to be a problem, of submitters voting for their own sites.
Josh brought up what I thought was a great point. We simply bump the needed Yes votes up to 7 so it allows a submitter to vote for their own site and lessens the headache of watching to see if the submitter did or didn't vote for their site.
Let's hear your thoughts so we can make a decision on this.
My problem with the 7 yes votes solution: the submitter who votes for his own site has an advantage over a submitter who was taught well by his mother and din't vote for his own site.
The best solution would be to disallow a user to vote for his own submission. Everybody happy: the submitter with a great mother, the mods and finally Baggs would be crying of joy.
Since at least half the posters don't do this anyway (write what they voted) then it seems it won't make any difference which way you choose. So I suggest choosing the option that makes life easiest for the mods.
I kind of like the notation at the bottom of someone's post, since otherwise I really don't know how they voted. I'm nosy
I'm sure most submitters will vote for their own site - so I'd prefer to have them with NO option to vote for their own. It would help the submitters who were raised right and don't intend to vote for their own, in that we would be able to carry on discussions without having to click 'UNDECIDED" for every post we make. I've seen several posts where submitters figure this out on their own, so let's make it easy for them _________________ my new company site - AlphaWeb Design & Promotion - for website design, web marketing, web conferences
Yeah, it would be great to have it coded so they can't like Baggs said.
I don't know if there is anything already coded in Hedir that assigns a site being connected to a certain member so it could be this way.
This is something Josh will have to talk about.
I'm inserting my lame look at it here.
I don't know what the actual code is or what the sql names are.
If POST_REPLY = MemberName(submission_thread) then VOTE = Undecided
The vote could be Undecided or NULL maybe.
I'm just throwing ideas out. Like I said, I have no idea what kind of code issue this would involve.
I totally agree with the fact the submitter shouldn['t be allowed to vote his/her own site. Any site needs objective checking before admissions.
hmm..I think I pushed ok button for the charity dite, however. _________________ Life's not as a box of chocolates, but more as a jar of jalapenos...what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow...

I think you shouldn't be able to vote on your own site full stop. I remember when I replied to a post on mine it wouldn't go through until I voted and what is the person going to do?
Of course they are going to vote yes, not to sneakily increase votes but to avoid adding a negative vote against themselves. _________________ Please review my site: http://www.hedir.com/groupthink/about16022.html#39994
If I'm understanding correctly there have been a few submission threads where the Undecided option wasn't there. I haven't see that for awhile now though. I'm not sure whether that has been resolved or not.

This sounds like an either/or situation with no apparent advantage either way until you step back and dig a little deeper.
Yes, it's obvious a site owner should favor adding his/her site to HEDIR. But, the vote shouldn't count since the owner is obviously not neutral. So, let 'em vote but take it away, or don't let 'em vote at all. Same difference. As Yogi Berra said, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it."
But, this is not the end of the story. A submitter does not have to submit his/her site. The submitter can submit someone else's site that seems to have merit. Shouldn't the submitter's vote count in this case? In this situation, there may not be a reason to go through all the extensive reviews, suggestions, changes, etc. because the submitter may not have the ability to effect changes. Just vote up/down, add/not add to HEDIR. Require votes with all comments because there's not a lot of reason to debate if the owner is not involved.
