Great idea to have different types of contests to encourage different types of members.
Some people spend their time doing reviews mostly, so it's good to encourage them to do more.
Other people are more interested in spreading the Hedir word (or carrying the Hedir flag across forums, as ajinmc does ) so it's good to find ways to reward those efforts too.
And there are members who spend their time thinking up new things to improve the directory.
Some contest ideas (not original, sorry - just ideas I've seen elsewhere):
- Acknowledge the top (reviewer, forum poster) each month. Prize could be a sponsored listing, money, big flashing lights on Broadway, whatever.
For example, it looks to me like the "Today's sites for review" links on the right side of the pages is not very useful. It could be changed to show "This month's Monster Poster!"
- Reward members who come up with a great idea for the directory that gets accepted and implemented. Acknowledgement for sure, perhaps a monetary prize.
- Stock up on Hedir t-shirts/coffee mugs/mousepads/whatever and give them away for prizes at unplanned times.
Public acknowledgement of people's contributions is very important. As well as giving out tangible prizes. I have a permanent sponsored listing at one directory after winning a contest - that was worth my efforts
But when you run any contest, you need to a) make the "rules" clear, b) keep it on schedule (start and stop when you say it will), and c) quickly publish the results for the community to see. That's where some directories have gone astray - they run contests but don't keep them on schedule, and don't post the results until a month or so later. People like to know the outcome.
Before diverting all energy into making contests and adding new features to the directory, I have a request:
Fix current processes first.
This is a big deal, I think - since it usually takes many months for a submittal to gather enough reviews to get 6 votes (or 9, or however many is required this week) it just doesn't seem right that a site should sit un-added for a week or 2 after it has reached the required votes. But they do.
Same thing happened to dust-n-shavings.com - it took over a week after it reached sufficient votes to show up in the Add list.
This is not motivating for people who have stuck through the review process, done their best to comply with requests, and done a lot of reviews in the directory (not just the 10 minimum asked for.)
People who participate should be rewarded by having their sites added as soon as they reach the required number of votes (whatever that number might be.)
- I would like to see this part of the process fixed. Let's not lose sight of the fact that hedir is called a "directory" - a directory needs sites listed. We don't seem to be focusing on getting sites into the directory very quickly once they meet the requirements.
So, I see 2 things that should be done soon:
1) Someone decide how many votes and/or reviews a site needs to be added to the directory. This has been in question for the 2 months I've been here.
2) Fix the mechanism that moves sites to the Add/Reject list so it has the same number requirement, and so that it automatically lists sites when they reach that requirement.
Interesting...I was just looking for the proper place to post something and here you have given me the perfect opportunity.
As a new person to these forums I was looking at different topics and noticed the heading about added sites. I clicked on it and lo and behold the most recent addition was from Sept. 30th. Two weeks...
I agree with you about making the addition faster...no wonder people lose interest in participating. Also, if you moderators are confused about what it takes to be listed imagine the people who submit...Is there in fact a clearly defined policy?
Keep up the good work...I am attempting to review sites as time permits. My problem is I am non-technical so I look at sites and try to put myself in a viewer's posture and ask....Does this site provide information? Is it easy to navigate? Do I like the overall look and feel? Does the grammar make sense?, etc.
Wish I were astute enough to do the tech part...maybe someday...when my vcr stops blinking "12:00" _________________ You never get what you want until you help others get what they want.
There was. It was changed at one time or another without my knowledge.
How do you solve the problem?
- Make a new topic thread(like a petition to have a solid 6 votes policy not 9)
- members must define what they want in that topic thread.(as in more than a couple of members agreeing on the same thing)
- the admin comply, reject, or put a waiting time on it.
Josh and Bret have both said that they will change things if it is what the members want.
So what do you want it to be?
First, it must be consistent. Your opening line says it best. You are a moderator and you aren't sure.
As for how to solve the problem? With all due respect to Josh and Bret you have to know SOMEOBODY either owns this site or runs it. I think having another thread would just divert attention from the real issues that all of you know...not enough reviews, too slow getting listed, etc.
Why not have Josh and Bret make their suggestion to the site owner, come back with some sort of firm policy, run it by the moderators and make a decision. No sense involving people who are one shot submitters, guests, etc. in the internal workings of HeDir.
I would think the moderators should be able to come to some sort of agreement. _________________ You never get what you want until you help others get what they want.
As far as MODS, we already have agreed to what it should be. Sometimes we need to step back and let the other community members make decisions also. This would of course go against how most sites run. The members at Hedir have the power for change.
Bret and Josh are the ones that will be changing it when you decide what you want.
masteri5: I don't consider you a one time shot poster. You actually have taken the time to care and state your feeling about the subject. That makes you a little more than that.
Btw: why don't all regulars make a pact and start reviewing sites per category for let's say a week.
Each week, one of us picks a category, we all just start reviewing for a week or untill there's no sites left to review. Then another one picks a category and we start reviewing there. On the right we get "This Week's Category" or something which links to the category's review forum.
