A couple of sites have been submitted since I started here that are for events that have an "expiration date". There is no posted policy at Hedir for this type of site and I'd like to find out if we can agree to something and post it in the Submittal and Review guidelines.
Both of these are good quality sites, and I would have recommended them to be added to the directory EXCEPT for the fact that once the event has passed, the sites become of very limited value and interest.
- Submitters will not remember to come back to the directory and request their site be removed.
- World Cup 2006 is over with - who is going to use most of the data on the site now? No one needs tickets or accomodations ... and once the legislation is passed or voted down, the site is extinct.
Some events have an ongoing site where they post the current news and archive the past information (like a yearly festival or conference.) These would be appropriate because they are not specific to 1 date, and are not a 1-time event.
But election web sites, legislation sites and sites that are about just a current event would not be appropriate to add.
Can we have a statement added to the Review & Submittal guidelines saying that sites for a 1-time event are not appropriate to submit?

Yes, I agree with it. Or we can create a special category called one time event sites. _________________ Web 2.0 bookmarking - I think you cant make it simpler.
At time of World Cup Soccer we had also promoted it in Hedir. The submitted site, mentioned by writergrrrl had a good potential at that time. Now the site is not relevent for listing in Hedir.
I think if we have a category called Special Events then we can shift sites like this. Let the other members have their opinion.
I was hoping a determination would be made, but this topic seems to have died out ...
Additional info:
fifaworldcup.yahoo.com is also linked from the main FIFA site. I have understood that Hedir does not encourage multiple sites with similar content, right? So in this case, it seems only the ongoing fifa.com site should be submitted/listed, and its "sub sites" should not. Otherwise, everyone with interrelated sites will want theirs added too (think linking scheme sites like eloans dot com).
This is not relevant to the discussion of whether a time-dependent site should be listed. Just wanted to add that to the mix
Who would remove sites from a Special Events topic after the event is passed?
The solution to many of Hedir's problem lies with category moderators. We need to get more and more category moderators with proper incentive structure for their hard work.
I had talks with few people and then decided to recruit few more people for Hedir who can do full time marketing. Also few more programmers who can deliver the right platforms and can keep up with the changes. _________________ Web 2.0 bookmarking - I think you cant make it simpler.

Regarding sites with expiration dates ... did ya'all ever make a determination? If we do not currently have the resources, maybe we just should not accept them until we do have the resources? Or you could just have a category for 2007 Events, 2008 Events, 2009 Events, and just delete the entire category at the start of a new year? _________________

This happens too often. We get a good discussion going, then too often it fades out until the original problem crops up again.

2) Should we have a separate location, like "Special Events", to post sites that are date-dependent?
I think this is the best solution.

3) If option 2 is done, who will remove sites once the date has passed?
I think all mods should be given the ability to 'manage' the Special Events section. It may only be a handful of sites per year, so no heavy work involved. I think I could manage hitting the 'delete' button once a year!
Writergrrrl - providing it's ok with the HEDir developers, would you have the time to set up a poll for the Special Events issue? I'd like to set one up for the UncleNaBob sub-domain issue as that's gone the same way as this. What do you think? _________________ Please help us to improve HEDir by reviewing some sites.

Yes - I can do this. I'd like to see a decision on both of these issues, so thanks for your input
