I am free for next 2 days and thought of initiating a book on blogosphere with all the experience I have.
According to me
Wordpress is the best application available.
Wordpress failed to offer the right platform for bloggers but offered platform for developers.
Google's blogger.com is the market leader because they worked on platform.
Google's Blogger.com is going to die soon for various reasons.
They do not have a community to develop more add-ons. Experts can't win the battle in Web 2.0.
They are just catching people young but wordpress has cool add-ons (over 1000 plugins and 300 widgets). I see all the best blogs running on wordpress.
With wordpress people can import blogspot easily.
Domains are going cheapers. Wordpress is also an application
New players have entered offering blogs for niche market. THAT IS SO COOL AND EFFECTIVE. Using wordpress application people are providing good platforms. Life is going to change soon and Blogger.com going to die.

Technorati is the top most marketing agent for blogosphere.

The biggest factor is that it is community driven. Variety of plugins are made available because of the community participation.

Blogger.com is the market leader because it is offering a platform which is simpler. People see blogger.com as a platform whereas wordpress is perceived as an application. Here is an example http://bambit.kusangpalo.com/?p=71 where the person perceived wordpress as an application which is complex.
Platform includes helping tools like plugins. Wordpress will rule there, It has over 1000 wordpress plugins, plenty of themes and close to 300 widgets.
Also sites like hedir.com can provide marketing platforms to get more traffic. latest blogs, integration with forums. Since hedir can attract visitors from all sectors it can be the best marketing platform.
One of the most important factor is community help. Blogspot and wordpress is just growing in this field but hedir and some other forums can cash in. Hedir can start a blogger forum and cash in now.
Integrating it with technorati and other marketing platforms
There are already many developed platforms like technorati, feedburner, feedblitz, mybloglog and many more. All these platforms should be integrated to get the maximum benefit.

Blogger.com's share is increasing. I just did another stats. Why is Google's blogspot's share increasing :-
They are catching the new bloggers with simplicity and word of mouth. But soon they will die. _________________ http://www.idealwebtools.com/blog/orkut-banned-india/ - Orkut getting a ban in India, why? Is it fair? Politicians not liking it as some voices are raised against.
Wordpress as an application is good but when you compare wordpress.com and blogger then blogspot wins hands down. Blogspot gives you the ability to modify the complete look and feel which wordpress.com cannot offer atleast in the present context. There are way too many security problems with that.

Vivek that was certainly a big limitation but I saw blogsome.com offering a complete template edit option. I am trying my best to make it happen and if that happens then nothing beats wordpress as a platform .
Hedir is offering all flexibility, support for ads, helping hand in promotions, category listing and integrating with community. I think site like hedir can do well using wordpress as platform. If there is a niche community then I will prefer that. Hedir category based forum may achieve in future).
Ask following questions to the host (if you are going for free hosting)
1) Why are you providing me a blog free? What will you get from it?
2) How will you help me with marketing?
3) What flexibility I have in editing my blog?
You will get an answer. I am going to ask this to Hedir community as well.
