In the spirit of RedHex's game, create some sort of contest with prizes (be it t-shirts, mugs or plain old dollars)

Promotion Campaign
Start a campaign across the web about the merits of HEDIR. Like: get objective, constructive criticism and feedback on your site. Find out what users really think about your site.
Use a link to HEDIR in signatures on other forums
Some sort of Yahoo answers system
Make use of all HEDIR members' combined knowledge.
Time limit
Introduce a rule such as: If a submitter hasn't made his 10 reviews within say.. 2/3 months.. his post will automatically be removed..
Note: this is how it used to be after Nov. 24 2005. Worked pretty well.
Crank up HEDIR's PR
If we can achieve a number of pages with higher PR (>= 6), we've got something to offer. Submitter will spend the time to get that link.
Perhaps HEDIR should buy some quality links?
Inform submitters about Community Review system
Make it crystal clear to submitters that it's in their own interest to review sites.
Auto first reply
Create an automatic first reply in submission thread after submitting a site. Submitter will most likely read it. Include the need to do reviews and some links to Review Center, Guidelines etc.

Currently, there're sites listed in the directory with zero or one review. It kinda looks bad and unfair. Move them to the review queue like any other submission.
Spell check of all official HEDIR pages
Let a native speaker or a team of native speakers check all "official" pages for errors. "Official" means like homepage, submit page, submit/review guidelines etc.
The disadvantage of a forum site like HEDIR's is that all information/ideas is scattered around different sub-forums, topics and posts.
Since I'm bored to death, I decided to start a list where we can aggregate all ideas. Let us start with two categories: Participation/incentives and General Improvements.
Credits go out to all members who came up with these creative thoughts.
If I missed anything, please post it and I'll update the list.
The list is in no particular order off course.
Regarding participation/incentives I am still not ready to give idea, need more time for workout.
GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS
1. Very good idea, I really like it. I have list of sites on whom I really depends.
2. Current directory listing depends on the number of review and recommendation vote. As the new sites are getting approved they will take the top positions in the listings and the sites with zero or no review will go down and won't appear in the top 25 site listings.
3. I think we can have a separate topic for the spell check and correction note page. While going through these pages if you find any problem, post in the topic about it. Editors will watch the page for any request for correction and work accordingly. You can mark the spell check note page with Topic Marker so that you don't need to remember it. I use this tool regular basis and it help me a lot to mark those topics for watching regular basis.
For the record: these ideas are not mine (well some of them are). I'm not trying to steal anyone's thunder. I just thought it would be good to put all ideas in one topic.

Incentive Suggestion Idea
(This is a modification of a reward system that worked very nicely for years in an online game setting)
1. Convert as many prizes and rewards as possible to Hedir points. This keeps things simple.
2. Create a new MOD name. Call this MOD something like "Hedir Points" or "Hedir Treasurer" or "Hedir Rewards". Let this name be a "hat" that various moderators have access to in order to keep track of point purchases and rewards.
3. Do not assign Hedir points for site submission.
4. Institute a simple system of earning points in addition to posting. Sample ways to earn Hedir points (point values are just examples):
3000 pts = Contest 1st place prize
2000 pts = Contest 2nd place prize
1000 pts = Contest 3rd place prize
3000 pts = Best submitted article of the month
3000 pts = Most quality reviews in a certain length of time
3000 pts = Best quality review of the month
3000 pts = Hedir Marketing award
5. Come up with new contest ideas:
* Best implementable suggestion to improve Hedir contests
* Trivia contests
* Logo/graphic contests
* Word scramble contests
* Puzzles and Riddles
* Games
6. Post an updated reward list every so many months. Rewards may include (again point values are just examples):
9000 pts = Featured directory listing on high PR page for 6 months
9000 pts = Free software
8000 pts = Tshirt
7000 pts = Mug
7000 pts = New logo designed for your site
5000 pts = Featured listing at the top of your category for 6 months
4000 pts = Resubmit a site that has had a major update for a clean slate
2000 pts = Site to be reviewed gets flagged to draw attention to it
Add and remove prizes every so often to make things interesting. Around the holidays you can have a "sale" or "discount" or some other promotion.
Once the points have real value, you can donate points to your friend for birthdays and special occasions. _________________
