Welcome to Hedir community. Hedir is a community helping to rank the sites on the basis of real customer feedback. Ranking is not based on automated checking of site properties but on the basis of experience with the site/business as a whole. Explore more about Hedir.
"How on earth can all of those submissions be reviewed if no one is here?"
Lets imagine a scenario:
The category for real estate already has 25 sites. Now the 26th website wants to get into the category. It can not get inside the category without bumping one of the other 25 away.
So what does it do to bump the other 25 away:
1. Puts a remote voting script on his website to encourage people to vote.
There are something we can do to reach this inflection point faster:
1. create a trophy for being part of hedir. Which people will proudly display on their website.
2. Make it easy for people to use hedir as a platoform. Expose you database table views in read only mode. So people can take this list of websites and do good things with it.

We are just 2 months old (may be one month of active participation) and we are already hitting close to 1,000 visitor a day. We can expect more participation in the coming days. Our category based review system will help us clean up the review queue.
Now virtually there is no need to dig down the forums to review websites, you will get fresh 5 sites every time you log in.
I'm getting a flash-back to those dreadful internet days when all kinds of sites had "vote for me on blabla.com". I REALLY didn't like it then, so please convince me that I will like it now. _________________ Please review some sites.

Hedir is almost one year old but community submission process is only two months old. We had close to 17,000 resources in waiting under the old system, so we thought to convert it to our new system. In the process we have created users as well.
We have taken the first part of email id as username (a hack to forum login) which resulted in 100s of info users. We have allowed our users to edit their username; hopefully they will participate and change their username.
It was a learning experience; at least we were able to speed up Hedir, now we are almost 300% times faster than earlier and still striving to make it faster.

I dont know of any other site on the internet in the past/present which tried to rank sites based on user votes.
The only time I saw "vote for me on blabla.com" was in flashing ads on porn website of girls. Where the website putting the ad wanted to attract traffic to its site.
Would love it if you could prove me wrong with some examples from http://www.archive.org

Exactly my point. Also hacker and crack sites used to do this. Not necessarily flashing ads, just a ranking system. Btw: if I'm not mistaken, even Google had (or has?) voting buttons on the toolbar

There are several directories which use a voting system, although not a remote voting system.
URL selection
If it is something like keyword1keyword2.com I will ignore it. If it is like companyname.com, brandname.com, personalname.com, someothernamelikeword.com then I will consider visiting the thread. I did observe that generic keyword domain name turns out to be bad submission most of the time.
Thread Author
If the thread author is a regular, I will make an effort to visit the thread and check it out. What goes around comes around and regular's submission more often than not are good submission. And yes, a dozen of one nite stand submission dun make you a regular. BTW I am a big man, so i am large.
Description
Once in the thread, I sometimes pray that submitter do use good english in the description. The description simple show how much the site owner/submitter respect/desire to be listed on hedir.
I really want to be lame and say this: SEO is a set of techniques, it is not a new school of grammer where you construct a long sentences by stringing and repeating your keywords. And then you pray hard that spiders will read your keywords and hope human start growing 4 more limbs.
In short, bad description = rot in the submission queue.
Mass submission check
Once you find a decent link to review, you look if the submitter did multiple submissions. If yes, beware and check if there are duplicates or affiliates (under the same catergory).
Once the coast is clear, then I can put on my thinking hat and enjoy the review process.
It does look like a sad case with a small core of reviewers. But it does take a solid core to go on. _________________ Cheers!
