Hedir Review : Username error?

Apparantly it's possible to choose an username already in use by another member. Check the Submission forum and you'll see a new submission by webmaster (joined on December 7th). If I'm not mistaken, this username has already been taken by another member (joined on November 19th).

We have already tested new code in testing environment which disallows duplicate usernames. It will be uploaded to production server after a few more tests.

This problem came about as in the previous code we were using the first part of the email address as username. I know, its creating problems. But we are testing the new code in test server and do not want to update the production site directly without testing the code fully.
