Hedir Review : Directories or specific sites for SEs?

Is it better to try to get a site listed in a whole load of directories or to see if specific related sites will accept link exchanges? Which to search engines look upon more?

No. of directories is not that important. Most newer directories will come and vanish within a few months. Try to get into good established directories.

Link exchange with related sites is ok as long as you do it for traffic only. Do not do it for link popularity.

Search engines value relevancy a lot IMO.

There is a lot of debate in the value of directories. It does not hurt to get your site listed in as many directories as you can. MSN favors these links more than Google does.

It's normally easier to get in the new directories with little PR than the larger ones. If the directory sticks around and gains PR then your link will become more valuable. Google doesn't seem to value many new links, so they will not be of a lot of benefit for a while, but once again in time as the link ages it becomes of higher value to Google.

I recommend getting links from a number of different sources not just one. Add a few directories at a time on a regular basis, do some press releases and submit to PR sites, write some articles and submit to Article submission sites, add links into your signatures at forums. All of these will give high quality links in time.

Remember that every established directory was new once. Smile
