Which one is better? An well written good sales copy without SEO work on it but good for visitors, or an SEOed copy of the same page, with keywords in 'proper' places but not so strong for visitors? Which one will you prefer?

I don't think that you have to make such a choice. You can write copy for your human visitors while keeping good SEO in mind. I'm also not sure that there are necessarily "proper" places for keywords in copy, different engines have different criteria and it is always changing.

Personally I feel that do not waste time on SEO copy. Write for your user. User are the one who you should focus your energies on.

Why not SEO copy? I feel that SEO copy will go the way of meta tags decription and keywords. Spamming in the meta tags had made the search engines define rules to filter out spammy submission and even punish those who abuse the meta tags.

Beside in SEO copy, you are playing along the rules of some search engines. Once they changed the rules, you need to rewrite your copy for them. Does not make much sense (and cents) as well. Stick to writing good copy for your human visitors. Once good user copy are written, then you do your best to optimise the copy to be SE friendly. But do not compromise till it sound tacky.
