That's a good point, Steve. Ken tends to grate on people's nerves sometimes, and I can see why. But I look at it as it being his personality. You can't change it, so why get pissed off about it?
And to his credit, I do believe he has others' best interests at heart. Yeah, he can be bombastic at times, but I think we all can. (I know I can.)
As far as the Google crawler goes, that thing's got some mad issues right now. I intentionally put the revisit-after tag in on all client sites just to slow it down; it at least slowed it down for a couple of days (so it does work, just not as advertised, I found). It was just raping my bandwidth.
As far as the black hat issue goes, I try to stay as white as possible. The way I look at it, sooner or later the engines will have to start really looking at this issue (especially big G) because of things like the Dark SEO Team.
Besides, the way I look at the situation from a commercial standpoint, anyone who would perform a black hat technique to try and get ranking is adopting a "me first" attitude, and that's one that quite often extends to customers. In Canada, there are a bunch of companies that adopt the same attitude and after a while, it gets really old really fast.
There are comparatively few companies that will work with you, as a customer or especially as a supplier, and that number is shrinking rapidly. I see commercial black hat (and in some cases grey hat) SEO as being reflective of that kind of attitude.
But, I can see it from the other side too. It's just as much the responsibility of the engine to filter it out as it is for the spammy types not to put it in to begin with. _________________ HEDir's Prince of Cool
Not pissed of really, just unwilling to waste time with it.. After the sandbox threads, and all the others, to see him hammer that girl the way he did without doing any research at all was just out of bounds.. But I really don't have the time or energy to argue like that anymore..
Whote hat/balck hat/grey hat, they are all just flavors to me.. I can see taking the risks in some cases and not taking it in others.. The real trick, obviously, is to be able to withstand the changing landscape of SEO.. With constant algo changes, new programming techniques (hidden divs), the definition of black and white is constantly evolving.. And if the clients understand the risks, more power to them for getting a jump on their competition and moving to the head of the line..
As for me.. I tend to be more conservative with client sites than I am with my own.. It's a level of risk that I'm not willing to take in most cases.. But like I told my accountant when we were discussing 'grey areas" in tax law, here is the line, here is the grey area, and I'll be standing over here in the drak with the lights off waving at you.. I figure everyone gets one free pass before being booted.. Look at how long it took Traffic Power to get banned.. Along with all of their clients

Welcome back, Feydakin. Name looks very familiar _________________ http://www.idealwebtools.com/blog/orkut-banned-india/ - Orkut getting a ban in India, why? Is it fair? Politicians not liking it as some voices are raised against.
And the joy that is life around here continues.. My Great Aunt died over the weekend.. Funeral is today.. I suppose at this point it's either laugh or cry.. As one of my friends said, it's bound to slow down soon, I'm running out of people..
