i'm fairly new to the SEO industry, and it seems a very elite market, and answers are hard to find.
the company i work for still does content writing for keywords, placed as links at the bottom of sites that link to an HTML page of 800 to a 1000 words, with the keyword appearing between 8-10 times.
Upon joining this community, helped learning, but now it seems no one else follows the same strategy?????
Does this actually work with search engines? or is it simply the on page content and keywords?
If so, they generally don't anymore. Usually they pick up non-competitive keyword traffic (e.g. "miss splelingz") but they don't get much in the way of real, targeted traffic simply because of off-the-page factors (inbound links, etc.)
Quite often, the doorway page implementation leads to a site getting banned as well. Big G in particular has taken something of an aggressive stance that way lately. _________________ HEDir's Prince of Cool

Stay new and it will help you more than being expert. _________________ http://www.idealwebtools.com/blog/orkut-banned-india/ - Orkut getting a ban in India, why? Is it fair? Politicians not liking it as some voices are raised against.
