Speaking of load times and search engines; is it a good idea to use your robots.txt file to block the SE spider from crawling images on a site? Does that help crawling/indexing go faster?
Do page load times/speed affect SE's crawling websites?
Its not a direct answer , but google kind of answers the questions by saying "if the serer is down then you wont get crawled". I would assume otherwise load time isn't a factor.
Fiction: If my pages load slowly, that will hurt my site's rankings.
Fact:
How fast a page loads does not affect its ranking. However, if your web server or connection is down or causes a page fetch to fail, that page won't be indexed.
Hmmm, nice twist. that also makes sense. now if it doesn't hurt rankings, will it affect the indexing of the site? _________________ Web Development Cape Town
For years I used a dedicated server and allowed friends to host their small sites on it. They didn't draw major traffic, so I really didn't mind. Over time, I never really saw the need to upgrade the hardware and referred to the box as "Old Faithful" as it was still serving up my database content like it had before Google became King.
About a year ago, I began to care about the load time of pages and implemented several software solutions. I figured that since I had a fairly dedicated box, that it had to have been software that was causing the page load delays and not the box itself. I wasn't exactly in the sandbox, as Google had indexed 850 of my pages, but still hadn't done the full 130K+. I thought they just hadn't gotten around to my site map.
About 2 weeks ago, I upgraded my server. Within 4 days, my 130,000+ pages were fully indexed. Google was waiting for me to realize that a complete crawl would have probabaly crashed my box (I'm a slow learner).
For all who may have a few pages in Google, please be aware that hardware upgrades may be needed in order for Google to obtain your pages. I removed my sandbags and am now enjoyed the life of the indexed.
PS: Brett do you ever sleep? You were posting pretty fast before I went to bed then I get up this morning earlier than usual and you are here again posting like an automated machine. hehe
Do you have your speakers turned way up to let you know you have email when you are sleeping and then jump out of bed to check it?
Have a good one. Good conversation by the way and I love your grim reaper linux penguin.
