Call it enlightened self interest, but this particular site is not one that ever would be now, or should have then, been approved for inclusion, but it also has 2 no votes and no yes votes..
I have no idea what happened in November, I don't mind the ones that have no votes either way being included too much, but sites with only no votes probably need to be put back into the review process or removed entirely..
The paid submissions (prior to the current sytem) will not get mixed with the listings approved by community. So, there is no 'getting around the review process' as such
Sure it is.. It gets listed in the same directory as the ones that go through the review process, and if they are like the sponsor listings I've been seeing, they even get preferential treatment by being listed at the top of the category..
I really don't intend to beat you up over this, but by that standard, I could submit a site that does not qualify on it's own merits to be included in the directory, have it rejected, and then simply pay to still be listed, and be at the top of a category as well.. This is the point I'm trying to make..
Right now I see no way to become a sponsor other than to review sites and gain points.. Which again puts us at a disadvantage to the sites that were simply included.. How long does a sponsorship last?? And once you become a sponsor, can you be removed from that spot prematurely??
This issue wouldn't bother me so much if the site I'm referring to had any redeeming qualities at all.. And I am sure that there are other listings in the directory that fit this description.. It's just tough to go through the rather arduous process of getting listed only to find these types of sites here, and to have them listed as sponsors as well..
It's probably a good thing that I didn't go through the directory before I decided to start reviewing sites, or even before I submitted my site some time after that (btw I wonder how many people come in and review before they submit?).. If I had seen these sites first I probably would have been pretty upset about the way some fo these sites are being racked over the coals before being included..
Some of the listings you can see in the categories were added by our staff editor (prior to the current system). Since there was no community review/voting at that time, so it is only natural that such listings will have low/no votes/reviews.
We are not giving any priority to such listings. Our current algorithm for any category listing takes into account the difference of yes no votes. So these listings will get replaced naturally by other sites reviewed/voted by the community with time .
The sponsor listings are just that - sponsors. We have clearly marked them as advertisements. Every online venture needs revenue to run smoothly, and sponsors are just one of the avenues. Even the search engines have sponsors. Besides, we will have only two sponsors per category. Wherever there are more than 2 sponsors, we are moving others to another category.
And yes, i am aware that some of the previous paid listings could not be moved to the sponsors section due to some bugs. We are checking the whole directory and shifting any such listing to sponsors section.
BTW, the sponsors are NOT permanent listings. There are two types - one year sponsors and three year sponsors. _________________ Evolution is always better than revolution. My attempt at Blogging!

Not sure I'm reading this correctly but it appears that sites without listable content but with checkbooks can circumnavigate the diligent work by community volunteers. These paid listings appear above the hard work of volunteer directory reviewers who have committed lots of hours in pursuit of creating a place for overlooked quality content on the web.
If the goal is to build the content of the directory to be a valuable resource, then clicking on a top listing link and landing on a page of affiliate links hardly reinforces that principle.
I have no suggestion as to how to earn funds to sustain the directory but IMO leaving low quality sites at the top only serves to undermine the founding ideals and to energize and grow the volunteer base.
That's kind of where I was going with this but since I brought up the issue regarding sites in a category that is more than a little important to me I was trying to be subtle
