I am introducing this tool to make the review system better and address most(if not all) of your concerns.

Let me first thank Google Junky and AjiNIMC for generating the idea of customized review and putting it in simple practical terms.

Thank you guys.

What is this review center :

Simply put, it is an interface where you get to set your own priority list based on your own preferences. These are the tags you can choose to set your preference

  • URL
  • Total votes on the site
  • %of 'yes' votes
  • Submission date
  • Total reviews for the site
  • Submitter's community name
  • Submitter's Hedir Points
  • Total reviews by submitter

Here is a screenshot of the tool.
<removed screenshot as we are having a slightly different review center now>

Let me state a case scenario - say, you want to review business category sites based on hedir points of the submitters. This is what you will do -

  • Choose 'category' as 'business'
  • Choose a 'tag' (as mentioned in the list above)
  • Choose 'sort order' - ascending or descending
  • Click 'arrange'

you will get a list of sites based on your preferences. Then you can select any forum url from the list and complete the review.

What more changes we will do :
  • We will remove the current 'review list'
  • We will close the 'site submission and review' forum from direct access
  • Users will be directed to 'Hedir Review Center' to do reviews

How the community will benefit:

  • No forced algorithm for review list
  • It will be you who will set the preferences (read call the shots!).
  • It will bestow the responsibility and power directly on you to deliver a better resource base.

What i ask of you:
  • Send me your preference tags (reply to this post)
  • Point out any drawbacks of this system
  • Suggest additional requirements
  • And all other things that i can't remember right now ... Smile

For next 2 weeks this is our topmost priority and we will be constantly trying to improve the tool from your feedback.

P.S: In the past few weeks we have been doing some rigorous testing/retesting to wipe out the bugs in our alpha and beta servers, hence development activities are not visible in production. We are putting all the changes to production one by one. All you people have been of great help by pointing out the mistakes and suggesting improvements and i hope you will continue to do so. Smile

if I'm understanding correctly.
One of the columns says "forum url". We would still have a forum url to go to and post. Just not a list of sites in the forum type of format as we do now.
That was my take on it at least.

Could we change this to Members instead of Users? or do you consider that the same thing?
We have had many guest postings. I honestly don't think a guest should be able to post anything in a review part of a forum unless they have become a member "with a name"

Wow that is a very positive move, great move Lakhya. I will post more on how we can have a better review center powered by preference manager.

We should really play with it for awhile before making an announcement to the world. Otherwise you will have the chance of a follow up about possible problems. You have to walk before you run. Lets try it out for a bit first. HEDir doesn't need a black eye.

The first release of "review center" should be impressive enough to attract few more reviewers. I think it is a good idea, I have put few things here http://www.hedir.com/groupthink/about12264.html .

This will solve a lot of problems,

  • Ordering problem for the review list.
  • Making Review process mandatory. (As most of the reviewers will appreciate only those who review other sites). The submitter with no reviews will see their site added to Hedir system but not coming up for approval and then interested people will come and do some reviews.
  • Personilized algo.

Wow, this could be a major step towards improving the review system. Nice work, developers! Very Happy

A few(?) points:

  • HEDIR is also a community. I think it's important not to loose the community feeling. For me, the community feeling comes from watching what other people have to say about a site (for example). I wanna know how many coding-errors Francesco has found.Wink I would also like to know if others found any problems with a site which I overlooked (mirrors, black hat seo etc) and which are severe enough to withdraw my review/vote. If you're going to close down the Review forum, I'll never find out.
Therefore I'd like to suggest a tag like "recent posts" or something. The HEDIR Site Review Center should return the date of the last post in the particular topic too.

  • The category-selection should also contain "no category" or "don't care". I don't want to review category-only sites. I kind of like a broad range of subjects.

  • GJ is right about testing this first with a limited number of steady reviewers. Unfortunately, the number of steady reviewers is very limited so we all can participate.Twisted Evil

  • I also like to suggest a tag called "newest submissions". This could be handy for the steady reviewers. For instance: GJ always reviews some newly submitted sites, everyday. That is a good way to keep up and stay up to date.

  • I see a problem coming up with following topics in which a member was active but didn't review yet.
Example: GJ has commented on a site and I have commented his comments. The next day, I'd like to know what GJ has answered (in truth, I want to know if he already acknowledged my painfully wise words Twisted Evil ) How on earth can I find this topic other then memorizing the topic's title/submitter?
In an ideal world, I can throw topics in my watchlist and select "watchlist" in the tag box.

  • The previous point is only part of a bigger problem: the reviewing system itself. You mention "total reviews by submitter" etc. but in fact that is "total messages by submitter".

I know this can't be done in 1 big update but maybe it's wise to think through possible consequences of this new HEDIR Site Review Center in regard to other changes in the near future.

I see a future review system which makes reviewing mandatory to be able to vote. Votes can be withdrawn. Voting options are expanded with an option "undecided". "Undecided" automatically puts the topic on my watchlist which I can select in my HEDIR Site Review Center. "Undecided" topics stay in my watchlist untill I have reviewed/voted in the topic.

If I've voted yes or no, the topic never comes up in my HEDIR Site Review Center unless I select "recent posts" in the tag-select box.

You see the pattern here? My HEDIR Site Review Center. I see a completely personalized system which is powered by the member through tagging. The tagging is done by voting and in order to vote, I must review. You see, the tagging is only a coding equivalent of my reviews/comments. Then I can order my HEDIR Site Review Center based on those tags.

The personalization of the ordering system is just the beginning. The true personalization lies in what the member does or has done, e.g. reviewing/voting/commenting a site. Then the ordering can be done based on the member's personal history.

  • Another thing, as I've mentioned in the previous point: if I've already voted for a site, does this topic still come up in the HEDIR Site Review Center?

  • I would also like a "number of topics" selection criterion. Personally, I want the HEDIR Site Review Center to return at least 25 topics.

  • Let's pretend I'm going like a mad man and I've reviewed all returned topics (in my case 25), how do I get the next 25?

  • Can the server take the increased load? I know nothing about this but I can imagine one ordered list for all is far less intensive than multiple requests for different ordered lists.

  • A member must have the option to save a default setting. If a member logs in he/she doesn't have to set the selection criteria everytime. Member can save a setting and everytime the member logs in, he gets an ordered list automatically, based on his/her default settings without having to go to the HEDIR Site Review Center first. If the member likes to change the selection he/she can change the selection criteria.

Pff, sorry for the long post.

This has nothing to do with this new HEDIR Site Review Center. This doesn't make the review process mandatory. With the current system submitters also see their site in the review forum (if they bother to check) and not coming up for approval. Yet, they don't review. I don't see how this is going to help in that regard.

This is one of the reasons why submittters don't review (quoted from a PM I received):
Quote:
Whilst looking around the forums trying to get a feel for HEDIR, I realised the need for users to review other sites. I'm sure this should be obvious! Though when signing up to submit a site its very a like to other directories with different submission options, one of which is free and to be honest I took it for granted that it would be reveiwed, accepted or rejected.

Submitters simply don't know.

Hi all,
I was watching this topic most carefully, cause it will fix my future line of work for next couple of days. I am getting really good hints for the stuffs of review centre. Personally I liked baggeroli-s post and obviously others too, but IMO it will better if francesco can point out something instead of those key-phrase or oneliner. Twisted Evil

See what i like have from u people is discuss among yourselves(me too Smile) and then if u can fixup a common points that those featurs should be avilable in the review centre then u will be giving us a very good help for developing the tool.

IMHO I beleave that we can make HeDir a really successfull directory. So lets work together.
