Please read all of this before making a decision

storesonline.com is a site that enables a person to make a templated site using a java interface to produce their shopping site. There is confusion around these types of sites.

As per the rules we don't allow mirror sites, but these storesonline.com sites have me a bit baffled on how to proceed with reviews of them.

Here is an example: http://www.maysbeautyhouse.com/
It looks like any other site.

Now look at these:
http://www.maysbeautyhouse.com
http://www.maysbeautyhouse.com/site/1389281/page/45029
http://www.storesonline.com/site/1389281/page/45029

They are all the same page and throughout the site it is the same.
As for the storesonline.com/site part, it has the availability to be indexed.

Normally we would simply say this is a Mirror site.
On the other hand this is a problem with StoresOnline.com.
StoreOnline is irresponsible when it comes to their customers in this way.
The site owner using their service has no idea that this is happening, it's not a intentional or malicious act on the site owners part.

We will have many of these type of sites coming through HEDir to be reviewed.
These sites are very easy to spot. They always have /site/ in the url when navigating the pages.

Final question:
Do we allow them to be reviewed and included?
Do we consider them Mirror sites?

I think we have to consider the originality of the site, but this is only my thought.

To answer this question we have first have to decide how to interpret HEDir's "no mirror rule".

  • Any site that has mirror site(s) isn't allowed, even when only 1 site is submitted
  • Only 1 site can be submitted for review, other mirrors aren't allowed

I like the first option: no sites with any mirrors. Problem is these storesonline sites. Owners have nothing to do with these mirrors, the only thing they can do about it is NOT use storesonline.

Thats what i thought too. We can allow a mirror site if it is the original one.

No, that's not a very good selection citerion. How on earth can you tell which site is the original one?

Mirror sites happen due to two things - 1) the owner wants mirror sites for some reason, 2) Some scrapper steals your site and you are unaware.

For the 1st case, if two sites are detected as mirrors, the submitter can be asked to explain the existence of a duplicate one, and on satisfactory answer, let him submit only one, we can take that as the original one. For the 2nd case, ask the submitter to verify that his is the original site.

Problem is most submitters do not reply to any questions.

That would be a lot of sites in queue that will never be reviewed.
Time limit for a response? A certain amount of days?

Additional problem when you allow only the "original" site: if member submits the other (mirror)site a couple of weeks/months later, nobody remembers the original site is already included.

Reviewers have sharp memory. First hand experience, and it is true for most reviewers , i think. I dunno how it happens but every time i come across sites containing same content, a bulb lights up somewhere inside.

Solution is, if such sites are caught, delete all such sites submitted by submitter. Ban the domains permanently.

No sharp memory needed.

lakhya,

Ask your programmer to make it so it works like this

Submitters site: www.a-site-here.com
we want to search as a-site-here . not having to use www or the .com part. Setup as a wildcard search through the database of domains(which is very easy to perform in php). This will be 100% effective.

I hope to see this feature. It would be a great asset to productivity on hedir reviews.

Thanks,
Google Junky

Correct me if i am wrong, i think you are taling about duplicate domains. We have implemented code to prevent duplicate domain submissions.

Another thing, duplicate domain checking will not solve the problem. Mirror sites usually have different domain names.
