I have a site; want to start good link development strategies for that. One of the agent suggested me for mail crawlers. I am bit confused. I need some clear picture about it. Can you guys help me to understand this? How does it work? Is it good?

Your help are greatly appreciated.

Regards

I'm not sure if they're referring to email crawlers, but if they are, and I can't say this loudly enough:

STAY AWAY. STAY FAR, FAR AWAY.

Email crawlers are nothing more than spiders that crawl pages looking for exposed emails (e.g. Iwishth@spamwoulddie.com) . They take those exposed email addresses and collect them into a database, which is then used by its owner to send all those wonderful emails about how your penis is too small (something I'm sure the lovely ladies of HEDir can relate to), or how you can watch some 18-year-old having sex for the first time (yet she's surprisingly skilled at it) or how you can gamble your life savings away on virtual Russian Roulette or poker.

In other words...don't do it.

If you want to promote your site and get links, I'll give you the best link development strategy you'll ever get:

Work on your site to the extent that there as many reasons as possible for people to link to you. In other words, put up as much useful content as you can that will help people, and the links will come naturally and organically, just as Jesus intended.

Having said that, there are ways to goose the process along:

1) Article submission.
2) Directory submission.
3) Forum posts.

Those are the big 3, IMO. And 1) and 3) are extensions of "helping others for IBLs". They have a huge effect on MSN especially.

Hope that helps.

Automated email grabbers is what we are talking about here I am assuming.
These are evil. The very purpose they are to serve may become the very reason you lose your internet connection.

Scenario is...
1. You set your proggie to collect all email addresses for your "search phrase"
2. You have a huge list and send them all out asking to be linked to.
Here's the problem. Even if you attempt to set the proggie to scan only level 1 of the site you still have the potential of picking up email addresses that are not the owner of the site and are in fact an innocent bystander.

It only takes one person to contact your ISP to get you shut down and leaving you with looking for another ISP. These proggies are not accurate and can also send you to a site that had nothing to do with your phrase you were targeting. Which means even more unwanted targeted email addresses?

Hand picked as it relates to your site would be fine. There are still laws in many states that can produce a fine or court time for unsolicited emails.
If you decide to hand pick then be choosy about whom you pick. I have done this and made sure that I only got emails addresses from sites that were actual domains. The most irritated people will come from personal sites that are not professionals and couldn't care less about anything except talking about their dog, cat, horse, and their life history.

I may get flak over this one.
Although you didn't ask, Do Not join a link exchange program site whereas you are put in a list for people to contact you for a link exchange. You will just end up with many people asking for links that are not related to you subject matter. Linking to everybody that asks will always be a lose-lose situation.

ADAM is correct:
1. Articles
2. Directories
3. Forums
4. "Word of Mouth" doesn't hurt either

I realize that no one likes a slow approach to making it big.
Baby steps account for a lot when a site is still growing.
You learn so much along the way and growing too fast can turn into a point of no return.

Good luck in all you do,
