I am confused while selecting SEO friendly directory or site. How can I judge whether this is SEO friendly or not ? What are the points do I need to keep in mind ?
Any suggestion much appreciated.

1) Avoid urls containing characters ? , # , @ etc. These are hardly indexable by SE giant. I wanted to mean avoid such urls :
example.com/index.php?page=article&article_id=2803
2) Need to check robots. txt, to find out whether it is indexable or not.
3) Also check for "nofollow" attributes on links. You can check this by just opening "view page souce". If "nofollow" attributes is there with links, then the link isn't followed.
I know this is not enough points to judge, there are some more. May be other expert community members will share.

Hey Michelle,

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you there.
Search parameters are NOT indexable by the SE's because the robots don't perform searches. However, if actual links to search results exist on the page, the search bot's WILL follow them.
Your probably confused with the "&id=" clause in Google's guidlines, which is not that accurate to begin with. Check out my post for my submission, and you'll get more information.
However, most directories have an actual LINK to category results, then additional link to sub-category results, and so on.
So Michelle, what you have to watch for are the category links. Mouse over them, look in your lower left hand corner of your browser, if an actual link is there, then an actual link exists.
Then, check the paging on the directory. The 1,2,3,4,5..Next> at the top or bottom of the directory results. If the paging is javascript, when you mouse over, you will not get a link, but a (javascript.void(something), then you have to watch out. That's a link that the Big Three can't follow.
Then, view the source of the web page. Under View > Page Source in Firefox, or View > Source in IE. If you find the "no index" tag, don't submit, OR, think about this.
This directory might actually be used. In other words, the results of the categories might not be listed in the Goog, but maybe the directory is a REAL source of information for it's users. Believe me, alot are, if it's a niche web dir. Submit your url. It won't help you in the SE's, but it might help you get traffic from users from that directory.
Also, check to make sure that the directory hasn't been blacklisted by the Goog. How do you do that? Well, the Goog does keep a record of everything it passes by. A website might not show up in the search results, but if you enter the web url directly into the search box, you'll either get a no info, or the listing for the website.
If no info, step away from the microphone. If, there is info, check when Google last checked out the website. In the Google Cache, you'll see the date the last time Google crawled the website. Anything over three months, get outta there. This goes the same for MSN and Yahoo, they both carry cache's of their comings and goings.
Hope this little bit helped. _________________ Ambivalent? Me?
Well, yes and no.
Michelle, the problem with your question is that you're looking at it from precisely the wrong angle.
If you're submitting to a directory for SE traffic, the directory submission in and of itself won't help you. Individual inbound/outbound links are so easy to acquire these days that a link here, there, or anywhere is almsot meaningless.
The key is to get as many links as you can...period. There's no such thing as a bad link, unless you have to link to a bad area (or any area, IMHO) in return.
If your content is good enough, the backlinks will always come.
The first two results (designdelights.com and associationplace.net)? I don't have a clue who they are or how they got my link (although as scraper sites, they do get it off pretty quickly).
practicalthailand.blogspot.com ? They picked up one of my articles from a syndicate feed (although I did get an IBL, so I really don't care).
apexpacific.com ? *shrugs* No idea. Never submitted there.
My personal favourite is my article on stockmarketanswers.blogspot.com (mostly because it was posted by an "Analist".)
And therein you see one of the semi-great secrets of the web...content gets syndicated in ways you can't imagine. _________________ HEDir's Prince of Cool
So Michelle, what you have to watch for are the category links. Mouse over them, look in your lower left hand corner of your browser, if an actual link is there, then an actual link exists.
Better check the source for real text-links. I've seen directories which use JS to show a link on mouseover but that was for the links to the listed sites.
Another thing you might want to look out for is redirect-links. That means no direct text link AND your key-worded link-text could outscore you in a SE.
Example: I've submitted baggs.com to a directory with the following link text: "Baggs: for all your pleasures." and it's listed in (let's say) the lunatic category. The actual link is: directory.com/redirect.php&url="www.baggs.com". This won't do you any good as incoming link AND your keywords (baggs-pleasures) are not pointing to your site. It will probably never out-rank your site but it could happen. Same applies to a redirect-link to a "details page". Better be safe here and not submit. _________________ Please review some sites.
