My sites are very small, so I use google sitemaps to find out what keywords makes them appear in the results. It has helped a lot to add the relevant keywords and take away wording that makes the page come up on an irrelevant search. (Googling "home address" used to make my page come up third.)

I've used the plain text versions, haven't figured out the xml ones yet. But I did find that when I added or removed pages without updating the sitemap Google stuck to the sitemap instead of what was there. So I don't know if that's better from the google point of view but it helps me keep track of what's there.

As soon as Google ask about sitemap we should apply it. I use http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/index.php software. It generates also Yahoo urllist.txt sitemap, .html sitemap etc. The thing only don't forget is to submit those sitemaps to Google and Yahoo

I am using xml sitemaps, trying to submit it each week. I use SoftPlus GsiteCrawler. It is free, it let you select URLs to submit, and it also can make Yahoo URL List (not sure if this one really needed, but using it anyway).
You can get this here: http://gsitecrawler.com/.
Not sure if it have any add aware or something else inside thou. Had no warnings so far.

I noticed Google indexes my new pages quickly. I think it is because of sitemap. I don't know exactly if I need to submit sitemap every time I change it. I just do it every two weeks.

I have been using the Google XML sitemaps (i.e. "Google Webmaster Tools") for almost two years now and really like the system now. They have really developed it very well, indeed. And I recently answered the Google Webmaster Tools Online Survey and, soon after that, I received an email from Google that invited me to participate in the follow up Google Webmaster Tools usability study! And I really wanted to participate in that but, unfortunately, that study required a laptop or desktop with Windows 2000/XP/Vista and Internet Explorer browser installed and I don't have (nor desire to have) any system like that ever again!
