I'm sorry for ranting, but I truly can't take this anymore. I've spent so much time deleting spammy/invalid submissions over the last few days that I don't think I've seen one legitimate site that I could recommend just on looking at it. This is getting really annoying.
So...here's what I'm thinking.
1) CAPTCHA for all forms. If people are going to spam, they'll have to do it by hand. I think a lot of it's automated, from the looks of the random submissions and the varying IP addresses.
2) Word censorship. I keep seeing casino, porn and drug words that we should never be allowing in the first place. IIRC, it's a built-in function in phpBB (although I've never admined it before.) Let's use it!
Those two alone would kill at least 65%.
3) Word/phrase/sentence percentage counting to avoid the repeaters, avoid the repeaters, avoid the repeaters, avoid the repeaters.
4) Registration required before posting. Articles, submissions, it doesn't matter...make 'em register.
That way, we get the quality stuff to review, not ten thousand pounds of crap.
I don't really speak for anyone else, but I would really prefer if stuff like this were dealt with rather than trying to add new features. _________________ HEDir's Prince of Cool
I definitely like your suggestions. It's easy to implement a CAPTCHA in forms, especially for guests. I don't like having them for everyone, because they get really annoying, but is it possible to do a CAPTCHA for guests and for people with, say, less than 20 posts?
I don't like requiring registering before posting, because it might kill some traffic to hedir. I don't know how many guest posters there are, and how many of those end up registering to hedir. _________________ Contact Table Generator Email address munger

IMO the real problem here is: why do we have to ask multiple times for something before it gets done? Guest posting is an old issue. There's a very simple solution for most of the spam posts: turn off guest posting. If not indefinitely, then for the time being 'till other steps have been taken. _________________ Please review some sites.

1. I would rather see guest posting vanish all together.
2. Then captcha added to the registering process.
3. Then later see if banned words still need to be implemented. I'm sure it still will be needed.
I'd agree with CAPTCHA on the reg process, but it should be at all points as well. One manual registration opens up the door to automatic login, submission and posting. That's why it has to be on all forms, IMHO....there's still a manual step that leads to an automatic. _________________ HEDir's Prince of Cool
We are going to turn off the guest posting in all the forums except Offtopic for sometime. These steps are being taken as intermediate measurement for controlling the spam posting. This will be on till other steps have been taken.
