Are we dependent on Search Engines?

  • As a business.
  • As a customer.

Can we survive without pampering Search engines in this era of online business where almost 80% of visitors comes through search engines?

The answer is 'YES' we are very much dependent on SE. I think other than Yahoo and Google and some big exceptions, rest of the site got visitors from the SE only.

May be, but not right now. It depends on the site we own. Say for example Hedir is not fully dependent on SERP since it is an directory site, but it is not always true if you have any financial site.

I agree, while doing marketing consultation for retailers like Walmart I have seen the amount of money they spend to introduce their products to a new customer. Search Engines empowers the customers to get things by demand.

In offline business I use to do marketing in two phase :-

  1. One team to introduce products to new customers. Getting a new customer is really tough.
  2. The second team to retain customers, creating brands and converting customers to clients. If getting a new customer is tough then tougher is to keep them.

In online business I just rephrased my strategies :-

  1. Get Search engine presence by doing a bit of SEO Smile . No black hat stuffs, very simple methods following the true guidelines.
  2. To retain visitor on your website, this is also a part of SEO. http://www.visitlab.com is allowing me to check the average time a visitor spends on the website. Improving average time spent will get you higher ranks in Google as it speaks for itself.

Online and offline markets are no pole apart except the presence of search engine allowing ads by demand.

One should never put all their eggs in one basket.. Small and start up businesses that rely 100 % on search engines are inevitably doomed to fail. Build up links, articles, press releases, pamper to all 3 main engines and of course still use the old fashioned methods of fliers, print and press!

Nowadays no advertising niche should be worth more than say 20% of your income expectance, therefore if something crashes and burns you still have the remaining 80% to stay afloat in a competitive world.

Very well said but Internet business is big money with high ROI when compared to other offline mods. It is no doubt with a higher risk. I know who earned some good money before Google ban and they were quite happy with the ROI.

For brands I agree with you completely.
