I am sure we all have studied different directories. Why can't we share knowledge regarding each directory (one directory per thread)?

Like,

  1. Is it free or paid?
  2. What packages do they offer?
  3. Is it worth submitting?
  4. Do they accept all submission?
  5. How much time does it take for free submission to be accepted?

Let's make a list of queries which can help our community judge the directory value. We will keep the thread update.

This will act as a testimonial page for directories, what do you say?

One more thing to add
How many visitors they send you . This is most important.

Thats a good suggestion Norah.
We already have a list of good directories in xml here http://hedir.com/rss2js/directory-list.xml
Directories with positive feedbacks can be added to this list to make it more useful for webmasters.

Important things from SEO point of view:

  • direct text-link
  • crawled by spiders
  • NO redirects (could hi-jack your site)
  • no robots.txt exclusion
  • no <robots> exclusion
  • quality sites in "your" category
  • preferably no reciprocal required

Can you please explain the hijacking part, do you mean page hijacking?

I just wanted to ask the same. What means to high-jack a site?

I call a directory the GOOD DIRECTORY when:

- has direct link to my site,
- gives me a chance to add my site for free,
- has + PR,
- has index, follow in meta robots,
- has not exclusion in robots.txt file which stops algo from indexing the page where my site is presented.

I mean the infamous 302 redirect that some directories are using. It means that those directories become competitors for your keywords or title because Google (and MSN?) have some issues with 302's.

I've had some experience with this. My site was listed in a directory which used some kind of 302 redirect and this directory almost beat me in the SERP's showing exactly the same title and description.

You may want to read this or go to webmasterworld.

You mean you are listed on a page say /directories.html and your link is /site/102.html , which does not exists but redirects to your site with a 302 header.

Am I right?

I don't know, Acorus. I just learned it the hard way. Another thing to pay attention to is to REALLY check if the directory uses a direct text link. I've seen some smart directory owners who used a JavaScript mouseover with the site-URL to give the impression of a real direct text-link. When I checked the page source, it was a redirect instead.

Why would someone who runs a directory site use all of these linking/redirecting games instead of just providing basic links? What is the benefit to the site owner?
