It is more about localization, in other sense local personalization. Unfortunately technologies drives Information in IT, here the better technology wins. Alibaba should hire some google engineers
in a sense, you guys are right, alibaba is no fight against the "Google-giant".... it's not even a "David vs. Goliath" case, not even close....
but one thing to point out though, for google to push into the China net, where they (i say they to distinctively separate myself from the general chinese) do not believe in piracy laws and censorship (other than government talks of course), http://www.baidu.com/ IS the biggest and only search engine in the great land, offering anything from legal/botlegged movies, mp3, and just about anything you can think of.... essentially, a chinese version of google, but very minor emphasis on internet etiquette _________________ Sometimes you think you're crazy....

China is a very different market. We have spent some time studying the Chinese market during our management courses.
What works for others may not work for Chinese markets; it is a market with a hidden taste. Ask advertisers who spent time china.
Google is surely gonna have tough time there. _________________ http://www.idealwebtools.com/blog/orkut-banned-india/ - Orkut getting a ban in India, why? Is it fair? Politicians not liking it as some voices are raised against.
Localization only works so far. Just like McDonald's, Google is smart enough to be able to bend to meet the Chinese market need without sacrificing the core of what Google is all about. With their financial backing, I really don't see anyone putting up any real competition for long.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I believe the Internet and the globalization/freedom it brings inevitably brings with it a certain "western culture" vibe. I suspect many of the lead Chinese Internet users will be drawn to Google because it will be seen as Internet flagship in western culture. These Internet leaders are the ones who inevitably teach newcomers, and it flows down from there. _________________ Alter-Ego profile migration - we need beta testers!
