It would be fairly trivial to parse everything from the + sign to the @ symbol out of a list of e-mail addresses. I would think that most of the major spammers would run those kinds of checks.
Unfortunately, I was unable to see any reference regarding the ability to use plus addressing.
As others have correctly pointed out, there are many other ways to avoid spam. This wasn't however, intended to avoid spam. Instead it was a way to more easily track its source.
Fighting spam will be a never ending battle as techniques and methods of both spammers and anti-spammers change. As with many things tech, once someone finds a way to build a better mousetrap, someone comes along an builds a better mouse. _________________ Cable and PCB Assembly My Personal Pop Culture Site
the trick might actually be better if done with pop in reverse, for instance - setting up the pop with a name+nospam@gmail - and only retreiving that mail.

use
(anyname)@dodgeit.com
then go to dodgeit.com and type (anyname) in the provided box
dodgeit does not require you to sign up and its free!
However it is not private. so do not use it for secure information
Some sites reject the "+" character, such as photo.net. The nice thing about using this is stuff you really want will still come to you, and anything which becomes annoying you can use GMail filters and redirect (folder it) or delete it.

Spamgourmet (w w w . s p a m g o u r m e t . c o m) is free, it doesn't give away your email address, and you can define who can mail you on which address!
I've been using this trick for a few months. But I've been noticing that more and more sites are now rejecting email addresses that contain the + sign.
Yahoo! Mail Plus has allowed alias email addresses for years. I create a new alias for every registration. If I get too much spam on that address, I just delete it.

So another reason to switch to Apple: dot-mac, the email/net disk/etc. service from Apple has email aliases for just this purpose. When you get too many spam to that alias, turn it off.
