The 's' just stands for secure or security. Normally used when collecting sensitive information as in your credit card details. I'm sure someone here can offer a more technical explanation.

Hi BusyBite,

When you see https, that means the communication between your browser and the server are encrypted. Its used mostly when you need an extra layer of security, such as payment transactions, or viewing financial information online, such as your bank account.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

PCBguy has answered it perfectly. Smile I like to add one point more.

In case of https it uses a encryption. For this purpose server sends a certificate for the browser(client). After accepting it, that specific browser is treated as trusted party for the server. Then browser can send encrypted information to the server. Server accepts it and decrypt it to get the original value.

In case of http, while sending information to the server a third party can hack it and easily retrive the values. This doesn't occur in case of https. If somebody anyway hack the information, they can't retrive the original value as the decryption algorithm is only known by the server. This is the way https secures the information while transmitting it.

regards,
Josh

https: URL used with a different default port 443 (for normal http the default port is 80) and it provides an additional encryption between HTTP and TCP.
