Hi, have you ever heard "link bait"? What's it? Is this some sort of SEO technique?

Thanks

Link bait is any content or or a feature on a website that is interesting enough to users to place links to it from other websites.

Since the big search engines consider the number of links to a site as one of the factors in the importance of the site, many SEOs will try some link baiting techniques. An article, blog post, forum discussion or tool that it lucky enough to get on the front page of Digg for example, has a good chance of scoring a lot of links.

Hi Josh,

My pleasure! Smile

I think BigG, indeed all the search engines should have no issues with using link baiting techniques. The traditional method of gathering links has been to create good relevant content that is gradually discovered by people and is linked to over time.

Link baiting could be considered part of viral marketing because it is passed from person to person. The effect of "I found something cool so I'll share it with my friends" is something we probably have all done at one time or another.

With the explosion in blogging and the growth of the social bookmaking sites, the time between the creation of something "link worthy" and having a significant number of links has diminished.

In the end if you create good content that people find useful, interesting, or funny, once people find it they will link to it.

What does everyone else think?

I've never had much success with 'natural linking'. I write articles & tutorials on a fairly regular basis and also have some humerous stuff but still have no evidence of anyone actually linking to my pages, other than 'sought after' links. I suppose it only really works if you run a very large site, or have some 'red-hot' tips, such as your recent gmail article which certainly garnered a lot of interest.

Hi,

For the recent article on gmail trick in Hedir Jackie had submitted it to different bookmarking sits using our bookmarking tool. Smile I think this gives a good response for getting links.

Few days ago while checking the Web 2.0 Bookmarking Tool log I found lot of people have taken the code and there are some interesting sites and blogs using this tool too.

Regards,
Josh

I've always found article work well for attracting links. There are some good article submission services out there if you don't want to go through all the article site submitting by hand...
