At work I have ran into the problem of the supervisor not attending to the needs of the workers. He has an addiction to Ebay and won't leave the computer unless you pry him away with a crowbar.

At most work places the standard rule is in place that you are not allowed to download material or install software on company computers. I had to find a way around this and only using the standard windows setup to stop this problem.

There is a "Host" file in the windows system that allows any site you choose to be blocked. The only thing they will see is a "Page cannot be viewed" screen.

So here is how you do it

The HOST file is a file with no extension.
On Windows XP it is at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
On Windows 2K it is at C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

Open the HOST file with a text editor like notepad.

Start adding sites you want to be blocked just after this line
127.0.0.1 localhost

127.0.0.1 is your local machine

For my supervisor I will be adding 2 new lines just after that one.
127.0.0.1 ebay.com
127.0.0.1 www.ebay.com

Save the file and the next time the computer is restarted the block on Ebay will take effect.

Here is a list I made wipe out Ebay use completely

You have to use the ip address for the site you want to redirect to

65.36.229.56 ebay.com
65.36.229.56 www.ebay.com

If the person tries to access Ebay.com they will now be redirected to 66.135.41.9 which is the IP for Virtual-Addiction.com

A funny thing to do would be to set up a site whose home page looked like eBay and have all the links and the search form on the page go to a new page that reads.

"NOW GET BACK TO WORK!"

Then point the HOSTS file to the IP of your new site. Twisted Evil
