Bloggers and others do make a lot of bucks putting adsense in their sites. I am sure you guys are using the adsense too. Let me hear how much you make from adsense? And what do you do with that? Exact figure not required, just throw your estimation here.

I know people who make US$7-8,000 per month or more. They are often speakers at Google's AdSense seminars. Their secret is to create original content that attracts thousands of regular visitors. Think Gizmodo or some newspaper site as examples.

Is this anecdotal, or have you seen evidence of checks from Google? Seminar speakers are great at making the smallest accomplishment seem like world-shaking news.

Not that I wouldn't believe someone who says they make thousands a month on their website just from having ads on it ... I'm just naturally cynical Smile

No, I haven't seen his cheques - it is by direct deposit these days - but he was in the "DHL Club" (local version of the UPS Club - formerly the FedEx Club) when Google used to send cheques. I am a friend of his family and know his business fairly well and we have compared earnings for over 4 years now. (I make <$10 a day now)

He has taken a 20% drop in earnings for the past year while I have dropped from being able to pay my mortgage down to peanuts. My model was based entirely on product catalogs, so I was hit with the duplicate penalty.

But I know several others in the US who are in the same or higher leagues and they are not Google seminar speakers. Smile There are some who run their own seminars on how to make money with AdSense -- now those are the ones you mean. I tend to believe that they do make the money, but they are keen to make even more through their ebooks and seminars.

I make about $5/month Surprised(

I think part of my problem is ad placement. When I moved from a much uglier version of the site to the current layout, my CTR was cut in a third, though my traffic doubled. I wish I had the time to play with ad layout Crying or Very sad

Yes, ad placement is important. You may find that the ad being clicked is at the bottom of the page and you have ads on the top and sides etc, i.e. its bid amount could be the lowest on your page. So, sometimes, reducing the ads per page can help.

There is also the AdWords Quality Score, which affects AdSense publishers and its related effect - Smart Pricing: http://adsense.blogspot.com/2005/10/facts-about-smart-pricing.html

There is also the quirky situation where you might have lots of MFAs in your filter list - removing them could improve your click revenue.

I agree that ad placement, and the testing of different formats is important. My most successful ad is a small block that immediately follows an article. Using Adsense channels is a really interesting excercise as you can soon see the ads that are a waste of time which then allows you to de-clutter your pages from too many ads. Blending the ads into your page can also pay dividends, and I'm not talking about sneakily trying to pass off an ad. as normal content. Colour the ads to suit your page and they will be far less in-your-face.

This is a shame, as I think with the writing skills you possess WG, you could do quite well with Adsense.

From what I've seen on the Adsense-related forums is that the people who are not doing too well generally have little traffic to begin with. I think many people put ads on their site too early. If you're getting decent amounts of traffic, then the ads should work for you.

I recently tried an experiment where I resurrected an old site of mine. I gave it lots of fresh informational content (the site does not sell a product, but advises on purchasing and other related topics). I then optimised the site for the main keyword and also submitted to many of the free directories posted here at HEDir. I then contacted some of my main competitors and asked them if they wanted a free feature page on my site. In return I ask for a home page link from their site and I also link to them from my own home page. It's early days yet but I've recently seen a surge in traffic and the site now pops up here and there on Google's first page. I then slowly added in some Adsense ads and these are working really well. I relaxed my efforts on the optimisation front and concentrated on getting the ad placement just right. Now I'm happy with that, I can go back and start writing more articles and contacting other people who might want a free feature. Now I'm being 'found', other competitors are now contacting me and asking for a feature page.

Re: competitors. I decided from the outset not to sell a product on this site. It would purely be for buying information and other related stuff. All my main competitors sell a product so don't find my site threatening in any way. I call them competitors as we are targetting the same search terms (keywords).

Many people spend hundreds of dollars to get a home page link from a PR6 site. With a bit of hard work you can achieve this for no cost whatsoever. If you decide to take this route then it's important you stipulate to the other site that any content they supply for inclusion in the free feature is 'unique' content, i.e. it doesn't already exist on the net. Otherwise, it's possible you could be penalised for duplicate content by G.

My advice to anyone contemplating putting adsense on their site is to make sure you've done a proper optimisation job, keep working on the IBL's and do everything you can think of to drive traffic to your site. Adsense should then work for you.
