Can anyone recommend a free, or paid-for utility that will create thumbnails of a site's home page?

I'd use the print screen key then paste and resize the screenshot and use 'save for web' which is quite good in photoshop elements.

Also I'm sure there's a better way than this but this is the fastest way I've found so far to get lots of thumbnails:
press the print screen key on the keyboard, paste the screenshot into any graphics program and save it as an image file.
Put all the screenshots you need in the same directory
The next step was that at the time I had a trial version of macromedia studio and one of the options in dreamweaver is 'web photo gallery'. If you choose the screenshot directory for your photo gallery it asks you what thumbnail size you want and makes them all really quickly using fireworks as part of creating the photo gallery. There must be other photo galleries that would do something similar.

or did you mean something that would automatically visit the site for you and make a thumbnail of it?

Thanks for the reply consumerism, however the screen grab won't work as many home pages go below the fold and I need to 'capture' the whole page. If it turns out that this is not possible, then I will go the screen grab route and resize in Photoshop. Thanks again for your input.

you could try zooming the page in IE7 or Opera so it fits on one screen and then do the screen grab

Sounds good! Where's the zoom feature in IE7? I can't seem to locate it.

I don't know if it's a zoom feature as such, but I usually resize the text in browsers using the CTRL key and mouse wheel - usually this resizes the text but in IE7 it resizes the whole page

Another way you could get a screen shot of your home page, is to check your traffic status on Alexa.com. Your home page should come up as an image in the corner of the results page. Just copy the image.

That's a tough one nozz. As I understand correctly you want thumbs of the entire page, including the part beneath the fold?

Another possibility: Adobe Acrobat Pro which gives you an IE button to convert the current webpage to pdf. Then you can save the pdf as jpg or something. Just tried it and it's not too bad although it has problems with some CSS stuff. It's expensive software but I'm sure you'll find ways to get it. Wink

There's lots of commercial software too: http://www.guangmingsoft.net/htmltoimage/help.htm
This is rather good and captures beneath the fold too. This one can also be found as torrent Wink

They also have a developer version which you can integrate in your own app: http://www.guangmingsoft.net/htmlsnapshot/help.htm
It's much more expensive though.

Thanks CG, this is a good idea. Unfortunately, it's not just my site I need thumbnails of, I'm featuring other sites on one of my informational sites and need their thumbs also. One of the sites I'm featuring doesn't have an Alexa thumb as yet.

Thanks for the info Baggs, I may just give your suggestion a go.

Thanks for all your help guys, it really is appreciated! Very Happy

Hiya nozzmoking,

You can find the the Zoom feature in the lower right hand corner of the IE7 status bar. If your mouse has a scroll wheel and you hold the Control while you spin the wheel, the page will resize.

You can also resize using these three keyboard shortcuts:

Ctrl + = Larger
Ctrl - = Smaller
Crtl+0 = Normal size

These same shortcuts also work in Firefox. Hope this helps!
