How do you select domain name? What are points you keep in mind while keeping the domain name? Is there any tool available for this purpose?

Thanks for your help.

Busybite, I have seen people using almost all the keywords in their domains e.g. “www.solutionforpetcareandfoodproducts.com”, which makes it hard for the users to read and remember the domain name. And this way, they end up misspelling the domain name and get a DNS error. So, try to get a domain name with one or two (or three) of your most important keywords in it, it will not only help your site to rank better in the search engines but also help the users in remembering it. At the same time I suggest that you put a hyphen in between long domain names, such as this: “www.pet-care-solution.com”.

I have no idea, which tool would be better. May be other members can tell.

I'd say there's a definite advantage to naming your site / domain / business with an unusual word, as long as it's fairly obvious how to spell it.

Current thinking is that a domain name should contain a couple of your most important keywords.

I avoid using people's names, since who actually does a search on a person's name when searching for a business? I avoid using the company name in a domain name unless it contains a keyword (examples: www.gourmetcatering.com is a business name and a domain name; www.bartendingsocal.com is keywords-based - the company is Sunseri which would be meaningless to someone searching for a bartending service in Southern California.)

I use hyphens sometimes, but I don't really like them. It's hard for a user to remember the hyphen. And you don't want to use something that is too easy to mess up the typing.

Hi,

while selecting a domain name I follow some simple tips.

  • use one or two keywords in the domain name.
  • the domain should be of moderate numbers of characters. a long domain name is tough to remember.short names are sparingly available.
  • easy to spell. easily spellable names are easy to remember.
  • inclusion words like company name, person name, job type name is good but you should take care of the above points.
  • hyphens can be used, but never more than two.
  • its better to avoid mix of small and capital letters in domain name. Many server don't support this feature.
  • gimmick or magic words are good but sometimes its risky too use them.

I think the name with one most relevant keyword and easy to remember is the most appropriate domain. Obviously you should the availability. Laughing

reagrds,
Josh

A tool to suggest domain names based on an entered keyword or two can be found at:

http://www.makewords.com/

It also checks to see if the domain name is available. Use of this tool along with the excellent suggestions of the other Hedir members might be just what you need.

Is it really that important to have your main keyword in the domain name? Think of the big domain. like Google, Amazon, Kelkoo, Apple. The domain is not the keyword - it's the brand. Keyword domains are out. Branding names are in.

So when choosing your domain name, don't get stuck in the keyword thinking. Take it back to the brand.

I particularly like google (who doesn't). Its easy to remember, you can verbalize it (let's google that) and it has a deeper meaning (googolplex - the highest number there is). And today, the brand is stronger than ever.
