I hope you all do directories submission. There are hell lot of new directories coming up every day. So, how do you select a web directory? What are the factors you look for, so that it will benefit you now and in future too?

Thanks
Jerry

Hi Jerry, I like that film. As for directories, I've been quite cautious so far and haven't gone for many but I've generally looked for each page having links focused on one topic.

I submit my sites to the human edited directories where I volunteer (Hedir of course! plus JoeAnt, Skaffe, Illumirate, DMOZ and Web-Beacon.)

I avoid all the new directories that are popping up because too many of them are likely to fail or fade away quickly. People found some free directory software, threw up a site and are trying to make a few dollars. This is not that far away from a link farm, I think.

I have not yet paid for inclusion to a directory. If I decided to do so, I would select by the type of link provided - is my link likely to get indexed by a search engine? If not, then I won't waste my money.

Since I don't use a directory to search for sites, then I don't value directories except for the potential for increased search engine visibility.

Apart from the abovementioned points. There are some more which one needs to keep in mind while submitting link request in a page:

1) Carefully study the motive of the directory. Select those directories which maintain quality listings and committing to build a comprehensive web directory. Avoid directories which are just made for selling PR or listings. I often find that those sites do not stay long on the web. I want to mean, those sites are simply banned by the SE.

2) Be sure that web directory URLs are search engine friendly or static e.g.- “http://www.kgts.com/forums/the-challenges-of-dynamic-urls.htm”. Because search engine find little difficult indexing the dynamic urls e.g.- “http://www.kgts.com/forums/thread.php?threadid=12345&sort=date”.

3) Some directories uses “no-follow” tag on text links. So avoid this sort of directories as this tag disallow search engine to count it as vote or link.

4) Number of outgoing links is also one of the major factors while submitting your sites on that page. One should always remember that there should be 20-50 links. If it goes more than that then the chances of users clicking on your link will be less. I also heard that if a page contains more than 100 links then search engine hardly index that page. Also ensure that you are listed on the very first page of the category.

5) Be sure that web directory is not offering side-wide links coz in the past this sort of site had been banned by search engine.

6) Check the listings in each and every category to ensure whether they are listings quality sites and relevant to the topic. Also be sure that they have not kept most of the category pages empty.
